The question of just who Astinus of Palanthas really is has been a highly debated topic for centuries. He has been present since before the dawn of recorded history and it is said that he shall be the last to leave the world when history ends. Some claim that he is a son of Gilean, the greatest sage and the deity of knowledge. Others believe Astinus to be Gilean himself, or a mortal incarnation of the god. Astinus refuses to remark upon his identity, considering it unimportant in the scheme of history.
